Political Awareness and Civic Engagement
Social media has become an important tool for raising political awareness among young people. Platforms like X (Twitter) enable youth to access global news, discuss social issues, and participate in campaigns for justice and equality. Through hashtags and viral movements, such as ClimateStrike or Black Lives Matter, young users become socially and politically active, using digital spaces to advocate for change.
This has empowered youth to voice their opinions and engage in civic matters more than ever before. However, this digital activism can sometimes lead to performative behavior, where individuals support causes online without taking real-life action, a trend often referred to as “slacktivism".
